When I Sing 01:58
When I Sing by Solvej Schou © I feel strongest When I sing I open my mouth And I pull in everything My mind goes blank And my heart, it is singing You wonder if you should be alone All the thoughts you have How can I know every one Except for love is the one On the edge of my tongue Except for love is the one That we are made of When it's cold I'll warm your skin My lips on the inside of your neck And then no words We don't need to say anything No words We don't need to say anything I feel strongest When I sing My fear slips away And the sound enters me Until I can no longer breathe Only sing Until I can no longer breathe Only sing Oh ohhhhhhhh Oh ohhhhhhhh ooooooo yeah Oh ohhhhhhhh Oh ohhhhhhhh ooooooo yeah

Mama 02:14
Mama by Solvej Schou © Twenty five years ago We buried you underground I built a statue of you in my head That's come crumbling down Oh mama Oh mama Oh mama Oh mama When you were lying there We've got the same brown eyes, brown hair And I knew what I would look like In 25 years Oh mama Oh mama Oh mama Oh mama And you were born with the blood After war in your veins Did you ever feel good enough? Did you ever feel alive enough? Did you ever feel good enough? Secrets and lies Become a silent mouth When you're holding your 9-year-old daughter In your arms Skeletons as big as the world Your heart must have wanted to break But you lied to your memory And you lied to my face Oh mama Oh mama Oh mama Oh mama

Big Sur 04:08
Big Sur by Solvej Schou © Take the Highway 1 up to Big Sur Going round, round the bend See the fog become the ocean The cool grey velvet ocean Clear the noise inside your head Clear the noise inside your head And when the trees turn into mountains And the mountains, with the beach below I'll look outside at the mist of summer Floating white, white Over everyone Floating white Over everyone Throw my worries in the ocean Let the air make my sorrow clean Rub the city from my eyes Watch the stars, oh the stars Cover everything Watch the stars Cover everything And when the winding road slides down To the cabin in the woods Where sun shines glass in the ceiling Later light, only a sliver moon And I'll tell you that I love you Wipe the hidden tears from your smile And above, only the birds in the sky Oh it's nothing oh it's nothing But the birds in the sky Oh it's nothing oh it's nothing But the birds in the sky Take the Highway 1 up to Big Sur Going round, round the bend See the fog become the ocean The cool grey velvet ocean Clear the noise inside your head Clear the noise inside your head

Charlie Parker by Solvej Schou © He cries when he plays A tear on the stage And his baby's dead Her skin so smooth The man waits in the car Name the names Dim the stars He said, "I paid my debt, No needles in my arms" Charlie Parker no more no more Charlie Parker no more no more The wheelchair man A bag of white in his hand He said, "We'll all become martyrs one day" Charlie Parker no more no more Charlie Parker no more no more No more Play like the wind Burns your lungs Fire out, fingers numb, fingers numb Fingers numb, fingers numb Charlie Parker no more no more Charlie Parker no more no more No more He cries when he plays A tear on the stage And his baby's dead Her skin so smooth
7.
End of an Era by Solvej Schou © It's the end of an era The race, the game is done You dream about the memories You dream about the fun The trips you used to take The laughter and the heartbreak Of the past, when you're young Of the past, when you're so young Your skin feels so cracked And your smile, so less bold You dream about the memories Of your dreams getting cold Glitter and flashing lights The never-ending night That grows smaller when you're old That fades darker when you're old And they say, "Here's to the future" The glint of a turning sign Don't mourn the beauty of forever When everybody dies Don't mourn the beauty of forever When everybody dies And I'm trying to remember The curve of a quiet road That always takes me back Takes me back Takes me back Back back home That always takes me back Takes me back Takes me back Back back home

about

Born and raised in Hollywood, and the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, Solvej Schou showcases a raw bluesy vocal strut with guitar inspired by Janis Joplin, Pretenders, Etta James, PJ Harvey, Sharon Jones and Patti Smith. Singing since she was a kid, she performed as a teen as part of the Riot Grrrl-led scene of female artists in Los Angeles and at cultural hub Regeneración. Now based in Pasadena, Calif., she has played solo and in bands (Bitch & Moan, The Lassiebeat, Racquet, Naughty Bird) in L.A., New York City and Copenhagen, Denmark. Her 2019 album “Quiet For Too Long” is filled with ferocious vocals, soulful lyrics and fuzz-soaked rock ‘n’ roll. LA Weekly featured the record as its album of the week (www.laweekly.com/album-of-the-week-solvej-schous-quiet-for-too-long/).

Schou released her unapologetic, vulnerable and defiant self-titled debut solo album in late 2014, followed by the 2015 full-band single “Friendship.” Recorded by Dan Heck in Alhambra, Calif. and Mark Mastopietro in Echo Park in L.A., and mixed and mastered by Dan Heck, her debut album blends garage-y rock and Americana melodies. It came out of a need to let her words and singing—loud, soft, emotional, raw—be heard. In the vein of PJ Harvey's "4-Track Demos," the album is solely Schou's voice and guitar, acoustic and electric, with some piano. A collection of songs both older and new, honest and uncompromising, written by Schou, except for an a cappella version of her favorite Talking Heads tune, 1983's "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," it covers everything from love, friendship, family, grief (her mom died when she was a kid), vulnerability and nostalgia to being a saucy woman and paying homage to jazz great Charlie Parker. In 2015, Flavorwire premiered the fiery black-and-white video (youtu.be/ljXYinubSrk) for her debut album’s song “Cruel Hearted Woman,” directed by Alejandro Godinez and inspired by PJ Harvey’s 1993 “Man-Size” video and Schou’s past life as a Mod scene go-go champ.
