America 04:50
America by Solvej Schou © You've been quiet for way too long In your home In your bedroom With your headphones on As the world burns red Blue kills black America, your white skin Is gonna crack A busted tail light A man, a girl A woman with her hands On the steering wheel As her boyfriend Soaked in blood, shot by police, dies America, can you hear her cries? America, the beautiful America, the brave America, give us your huddled masses We all just want to be free We all just want to be free My grandma came here from the ashes of war No English, no money Just hope in her heart Raise your voice if you're the child of an immigrant too Who built this country on sweat and the blues America, the beautiful America, the brave America, put down your guns We all just want to be free We all just want to be free I've been quiet for way too long In my home In my bedroom With my headphones on As the world burns red Blue kills black America, your hatred Is gonna crack

Age and Beauty by Solvej Schou © Age and beauty Age and beauty How does it feel To be a woman in the world? A woman in the world A woman in the world How does it feel To be a woman in the world? They say, "Show us your face And give us your body" They say, "Show us your face And give us your body" I'm turning the same age as my mama When she died I can see the lines starting to form In the corners of my eyes Black and white hair Tan skin It doesn't matter If you're curvy or thin They say, "Show us your face And give us your body" They say, "Show us your face And give us your body" Age and beauty Age and beauty How does it feel? How does it feel? Age and beauty Age and beauty How does it feel? How does it feel? They say, "Show us your face And give us your body" They say, "Show us your face And give us your body" Little girl Run outside I want you to know the strength and freedom Of your arms, legs and mind Stand tall Be loud Each wrinkle is a weapon That you're alive and proud To grow old Grow old Grow old Grow old Grow old Grow old Grow old Grow old Age and beauty Age and beauty How does it feel To be a woman in the world? A woman in the world A woman in the world How does it feel To be a woman in the world? You'll never know

No One Can Take Our Love by Solvej Schou © In the shadows of the mountains In the salt and sand of the sea In the moonlight of the desert I'll be holding your fingers So tightly No one can take our love No one can take our love No one can take our love Away from me When I look at your face In the morning sun At night, when we fall asleep I'll kiss your lips When we walk outside No hate can follow us down the street No one can take our love No one can take our love No one can take our love Away from me Away from me Ohhhh, you're not alone You're not alone You're not alone When the world feels like a bubble That's about to explode You're not alone We got the sweet warmth of our bodies Tangled, alive You're not alone In the shadows of the mountains In the salt and sand of the sea In the moonlight of the desert I'll be holding your fingers So tightly No one can take our love No one can take our love No one can take our love Away from me Away from me Away from me Away from me Away from me

about

Personal, political, loud and passionate, Solvej Schou’s 2019 album "Quiet For Too Long"—her second album and first full-band solo album—is filled with her fierce vocals, garage-y guitar, soulful lyrics and fuzz-soaked rock ‘n’ roll.

LA Weekly featured the record as its album of the week, declaring, “It's a record that reflects this current political climate: If your nerves aren't charged and tingling by the end, your emotions at tipping point, you aren't paying attention.” The album’s “distillation of frustration, sadness and occasional joy, alongside real world issues, into sheer poetry is a real gift, and a much needed one right now" (www.laweekly.com/album-of-the-week-solvej-schous-quiet-for-too-long).

On the album, Schou dives into issues ranging from police brutality, anti-immigrant fervor, gun violence, gender equality, American identity and womanhood to mortality, depression, love, loss and David Bowie’s death. The album has been covered by NPR, KPCC, LAist, The Watt From Pedro Show, Moment Magazine and more.

Born and raised in Hollywood, half Danish and Jewish-Polish, and the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, Schou has been singing since she was a kid, and showcases a raw bluesy vocal strut with guitar inspired by Janis Joplin, Pretenders, Etta James, PJ Harvey, Sharon Jones and Patti Smith.

As a teenager, Schou performed as part of the Riot Grrrl-led scene of female artists in Los Angeles and at cultural hub Regeneración. Now based in Pasadena, Calif., she has played solo and in bands (Bitch & Moan, The Lassiebeat, Racquet, Naughty Bird) in L.A., New York City and Copenhagen, Denmark.

"Quiet For Too Long" features Schou’s fierce voice and garage-y guitar, and talented Chelsea Jean Speer-Guzman (VesuviaSonic, Modern Time Machines, Chelsea Jean) on bass and back-up vocals, Eric Hasenbein (12 dirty lovers) on guitar and Bryan Bos (Goldenboy, Moonwash, Crossed Keys) on drums.

The album was recorded, engineered and mixed at Station House Studio in Echo Park in L.A. by Mark Rains (Alice Bag, Death Valley Girls, Sex Stains) and mastered by Marsh Mastering's Stephen Marsh (Ozomatli, Los Lobos) in Hollywood. Artist Delbar Shahbaz painted a portrait of Schou for the cover based on a photo by photographer Stella Kalinina.

New Noise Magazine premiered the red-saturated and wild-haired 2019 music video (youtu.be/UfTBiY4l9ek), directed by Ted Newsome, for Schou’s song “Flicker Away” from “Quiet For Too Long." In 2020, Audiofemme premiered the black, red and white animated music video (youtu.be/C7AMduApXiI), by Meejin Hong, for “No One Can Take Our Love” from the album.

Schou released her unapologetic, vulnerable and defiant self-titled debut solo album in 2014, followed by the 2015 full-band single “Friendship” and a 2015 music video (youtu.be/ljXYinubSrk), directed by Alejandro Godinez, for her song "Cruel Hearted Woman" from her debut album.
